One of their underwriters makes vile anti-Irish and and anti-Catholic comments online.

My name is Greg McAllen and I reside in Rutland, UK. I have been a loyal customer of Mercia Marine for 19 years, for the same vessel which I have owned since new and possibly for some of my larger vessels owned prior to this one. My boat was the subject of an attempted theft of the outboard motor whilst the boat was in storage, on its trailer, under a full tailored custom cover, in a secure marina. This was very upsetting for my family and myself, especially as I had, over the years, kept the boat in very much an 'as new' condition. The Mariner 90 4-stroke engine was recovered, but there was so much damage the motor was an economical write-off. Luckily the 4 HP Mariner auxiliary engine, radar display, radio, chart plotter and most other easily removable equipment had been removed whilst in storage. Mercia Marine used an independent assessor, MAC Marine Claims, to deal with our claim. Finally, after several months, a settlement was reached and we were paid for a replacement engine, plus the cost of other damage caused, such as steering hydraulics, electrical harnesses, autopilot cables, fuel lines etc. which the thieves had cut or broken, less my excess of course. As an identical engine was no longer available, a cash settlement was agreed to allow me to have a choice of a suitable replacement. At present, with unavailable time to research and purchase a new engine due to business commitments and bereavement, the vessel is without an engine. I do however, wish to keep my boat and trailer insured prior to being refitted. I have today, received my insurance renewal from Mercia Marine. Keeping in mind I have been with this company for 19 years and have never claimed against my policy in that time, I have protected no claims bonus, the boat is presently in storage, and the insurance cover is considerably less as the vessel has no engine, the renewal quotation has risen 60% on last year. We all know insurance costs are rising year-on-year, but having 19 years with the same company as comparison, it is clear I am being penalised for making a claim on my policy despite having protected no claims bonus. I have spoken to Mercia Marine and the very polite gentleman had a point-blank 'go elsewhere' attitude when I asked for justification of this renewal cost. It should be noted that Mercia Marine say they are not brokers, they are an insurance company, which indicates they have some control of the monies charged. Therefore be warned fellow mariners, all is well with this company, unless of course, you find yourself in an unfortunate position where you have to make a claim as they will penalise you as an incentive to go elsewhere regardless of customer loyalty.
